Disk Defragmenter
Why should I run Disk Defragmenter?
Well after using your computer for a while programs start to move apart on your hard disk, this is called Fragmenting and this cause start to cause issues with your computer. For example your programs my start to take a while to load and your computer may start to respond slower and even start to crash or freeze often, in extreme cases this cause even cause your computer to not boot up at all.
How does running Disk Defragmenter help me?
That takes me back to what i have wrote above, if this is not run for a long time your computer will become slow, sluggish and even unresponsive. Running this program will keep your hard drive in good order. It is good practice to run a Disk Defragmenter once a week to keep your computer in tip top shape.
Some quick notes:
1. To run a Disk Defragmenter you need at least 15% free space on your
hard drive.
2. Analyzing First lets you know if you need to actually run a
Defragment.
3. If you install, download or transfer allot of files on your computer then
you might want to think about running Disk Defragmenter more often. for an
average user running Disk Defragmenter once a week should more then suffice
4. think about setting Disk Defragmenter up as a scheduled program to save
time and make it something you don't have to worry about, do that by going
here (schedule Disk Defragmenter link)
Step One
Click Start then Select 'All Programs'.
Select 'Accessories'
Select 'System Tools'
Click 'Disk Defragmenter'
Step Two
Select the drive you wish to Defragment.
(usually this is C: but you may have other drives or partitions)
Step Three
Click Analyze.
Wait for this to complete, time this will take will depend on the status of
your hard drive
Step Four
You should now see a small Dialog box this will tell you whether you need
to run a Defragmentation.
(In my case i do not need to run a Deframentation as my file system is in
order)
yours may well say that you do need to in which cause you should now Click
Defragment.
Step Five
Now are you look at the two small windows you will see that the top one
shows how your drive is at the moment. and the one below shows how your
drive should be after the Defragmentation has taken place.
Please Note: If you have never run this program before then
Defragmentation may take a long time, i would suggest you do this then walk
away and leave it to run for a while.
As you can see mine mostly looks blue, don't be surprised if yours displays allot of red as this is normal for a computer that has not been Disk Degragmented before
Step Six
It may sometimes say as mine does below "some files on the volume could not be defragmented" this is because either the files are in use e.g something you are downloading that's not finished yet or maybe a program that you are currently using, if you are curious as to what has not been moved then View the report.
Step Seven
Now if you still have lots of red left (fragmented files) then you should really run disk Defragmenter again, but if its mostly blue then you can now close disk Defragmenter.
Congratulations!
You have now run Disk Defragmenter that's all there is to it.
